About Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD)
Sometimes our doctors will recommend Temporary Anchorage Devices, commonly known as TADs. These are small pins or implants (smaller than implants used to place teeth) utilized in specific orthodontic treatments to facilitate faster and more efficient tooth movement while enhancing patient comfort. TADs can be employed with braces or invisalign and give the results of a headgear without a headgear! They could also achieve dramatic results with may different types of orthodontic problems that previously only surgeries or extractions of teeth could accomplish! For instance, they could reduce flaring and protrusion of the teeth without extractions or surgeries, or reduce a gummy smile without surgery. Its amazing what these little sidekicks could do!
How Are TADs Placed?
A potent local anesthetic is administered to completely numb the gum tissue and surrounding jaw area where the TAD will be positioned. After the region is thoroughly numbed, our orthodontist will carefully insert the TAD through the gum and securely anchor it into the jawbone. The TAD placement procedure is swift and typically completed faster than you might expect.
During the TAD insertion, you may experience mild pressure sensations, but within 24 hours, the TAD will become completely unnoticeable. Your TAD will be removed upon completion of your orthodontic treatment or when it’s no longer required for tooth alignment. TAD removal is a comfortable, straightforward procedure that requires only a few minutes to complete.
