Pediatric Sleep Medicine & Airway Orthodontics

How can orthodontics improve your child’s sleep?

Healthy breathing is essential for healthy growth. Pediatric airway orthodontics focuses on identifying factors that may affect a child’s breathing, sleep quality, facial development, and overall well-being while they are still growing. At Buena Vista Orthodontics, we take a comprehensive approach by evaluating not only the teeth and bite, but also the jaws, facial growth, and airway to help identify concerns early. Children who snore, breathe through their mouth, experience restless sleep, grind their teeth, or struggle with daytime fatigue or attention may benefit from an airway-focused orthodontic evaluation.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, but children showing signs of sleep-disordered breathing or airway concerns may benefit from an assessment even earlier. As part of our comprehensive evaluation, we use CBCT (3D imaging) when clinically appropriate to examine the anatomy of the upper airway, nasal passages, and paranasal sinuses. This allows us to identify findings such as enlarged adenoids, narrowed airways, sinus congestion, or other anatomical factors that may contribute to breathing difficulties. When needed, we collaborate with and refer patients to pediatricians, sleep physicians, ENT specialists, allergists, or other healthcare providers to ensure each child receives comprehensive care.

Depending on your child’s unique needs, treatment may include Phase 1 (early interceptive) orthodontics, traditional palatal expanders, or advanced skeletal expansion with MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) or MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander) to support healthy jaw development and create more room for the tongue and nasal airway. By combining airway screening, advanced imaging, and individualized orthodontic treatment, our goal is to support healthy breathing, restful sleep, proper facial growth, and a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Orthodontic Expanders

In growing children, palatal expanders can guide healthy jaw development while the bones are still developing. Depending on your child’s age and individual needs, we may recommend a traditional rapid palatal expander, MARPE, or MSE to widen the upper jaw, create space for erupting teeth, improve bite alignment, and support healthy nasal breathing. Early expansion, when appropriate, can take advantage of a child’s natural growth and may help reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later.

Sleep-disordered breathing assessments

Our comprehensive airway and sleep assessments evaluate the relationship between facial development, airway anatomy, and breathing patterns to identify factors that may contribute to snoring, poor sleep quality, and sleep-disordered breathing. This personalized approach helps us develop treatment solutions tailored to your unique needs.
