FAQs

Your First Visit

What happens during my first visit?

At your first visit, our doctors will review your medical and dental history, take digital scans or X-rays if needed, and perform a thorough orthodontic exam. We’ll discuss your smile goals, explain treatment options, and create a personalized plan just for you.

Do I need a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist?

No referral is required! Many patients come directly to us for orthodontic care. However, we also work closely with local dentists to ensure your oral health is supported throughout treatment.

Will I get braces or Invisalign the same day as my consultation?

In some cases, yes. If you’re ready to start and your treatment plan is straightforward, our doctors may be able to begin the same day. In some cases, we’ll schedule your start date after reviewing your records and finalizing your plan.

How long will the first appointment take?

Your initial consultation usually takes about 60 minutes. This gives us plenty of time to take records, discuss options, and answer all of your questions so you feel confident moving forward.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Please bring your photo ID, insurance information, and any recent dental X-rays if available. If the patient is under 18, a parent or guardian must attend. Bringing your questions and goals for your smile is always encouraged!

Treatment FAQs

What types of orthodontic treatments does Buena Vista Orthodontics offer?

Our doctors provide customized treatment options for patients of all ages, including Invisalign® clear aligners, traditional braces, and Pitts21™ self-ligating braces. Each treatment plan is tailored to your smile goals and lifestyle.

What are Pitts21 braces, and how are they different from traditional braces?

Pitts21 braces are a modern, self-ligating bracket system that uses advanced technology to reduce friction and improve comfort. They often require fewer adjustments, can move teeth more efficiently, and may shorten overall treatment time compared to traditional braces.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place. The aligners are virtually invisible, comfortable, and can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing—making them a discreet and flexible option for many patients.

How long will I need orthodontic treatment?

Treatment time varies depending on your unique case and the type of appliance used. On average, orthodontic treatment lasts 12–24 months. We will provide a personalized estimate after your initial consultation.

Are braces or Invisalign better for me?

Both options are highly effective, but the right choice depends on your individual needs, goals, and lifestyle. Invisalign is great for patients who want a discreet, removable option, while braces (including Pitts21) may be better for more complex cases. Dr. Yamada will recommend the best solution during your consultation.

Invisalign

What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gently shift your teeth into their ideal positions. Our doctors design a custom treatment plan, and each set of aligners makes gradual adjustments until your new smile is complete.

What are the advantages of Invisalign over braces?

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable to wear. They allow you to eat your favorite foods without restrictions and make brushing and flossing simple. Many patients choose Invisalign for its flexibility and discretion.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Treatment time depends on your specific case, but many patients complete Invisalign in 12–18 months. Our doctors will give you a personalized estimate after reviewing your smile goals and digital scans.

Do I have to wear my Invisalign aligners all the time?

For the best results, aligners should be worn 20–22 hours per day. You’ll remove them only to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. Consistent wear is the key to achieving your new smile on schedule.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign can correct many common orthodontic concerns, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Our doctors will evaluate your smile during a consultation and let you know if Invisalign is the best option for your treatment.

Pitts Braces

What are Pitts21 braces?

Pitts21 is an advanced self-ligating braces system that uses a unique bracket design to reduce friction and improve comfort. Our doctors use Pitts21 braces to move teeth more efficiently and with fewer adjustments than traditional braces.

How are Pitts21 braces different from traditional braces?

Unlike traditional braces that use elastic ties, Pitts21 braces use a specialized slide mechanism to hold the wire. This allows teeth to move with less pressure, often resulting in greater comfort, faster treatment times, and fewer office visits.

Are Pitts21 braces more comfortable than regular braces?

Yes. Many patients find Pitts21 braces to be more comfortable because of the reduced friction and lighter forces. The smooth design of the brackets also helps minimize irritation to the cheeks and lips.

How long does treatment with Pitts21 braces take?

Every smile is unique, but treatment with Pitts21 braces can often be faster than traditional braces due to the efficiency of the system. Our doctors will provide a customized timeline after your initial consultation.

Who is a good candidate for Pitts21 braces?

Pitts21 braces are a great option for both teens and adults. They are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic concerns—from mild crowding to complex bite issues. Our doctors will help you decide if Pitts21 is the right choice for your smile.
